A beautiful site that most visitors never saw

This one stung a little, because the site itself was genuinely well-designed. Nice typography, a thoughtful layout, high-quality photography throughout. The problem wasn't the design. It was that most visitors never actually got to see it.

The issue

On mobile — where most of this business's traffic came from — the homepage took close to nine seconds to fully load. Every photo had been uploaded straight from a phone camera, full resolution, completely uncompressed. Several images were over 4MB each. On a slower mobile connection, that's an eternity.

Most visitors don't wait nine seconds. They leave in the first two or three, often before the page has rendered anything meaningful at all. Which meant a large share of this business's traffic was arriving, staring at a blank or half-loaded screen, and leaving — without ever seeing the design that had been carefully built for them.

Why this is easy to miss

If you're checking your own site on a laptop with fast home wifi, it loads instantly and everything looks fine. The problem only shows up when you test it the way a real visitor experiences it — on a phone, often on mobile data, sometimes with a weak signal.

The best design in the world doesn't matter if nobody stays long enough to see it.

What changed

The result

Load time dropped from around nine seconds to under two. The design didn't change at all — visitors just finally got to see it. Time spent on the site increased noticeably in the following weeks, simply because people were sticking around long enough to actually look.
