The homepage had no clear next step

This audit looked at a small service business's homepage — the kind of site that clearly had effort put into it. Good photos, a clean layout, a short "about us" paragraph. But something wasn't working: traffic was steady, and inquiries were almost nonexistent.

What the page actually did

The homepage introduced the business, described three services in reasonable detail, and included a short story about how the company started. All of it was well-written. None of it told the visitor what to do once they'd read it.

There was no button. No phone number near the top. No obvious "here's how you start working with us." A visitor who was genuinely interested still had to think about what to do next — and thinking is exactly what causes people to leave instead of act.

Why this matters more than it seems

People rarely arrive at a website already committed to converting. They're evaluating. If a page doesn't make the next step obvious — obvious enough that you don't have to hunt for it — most visitors simply close the tab, even if they were genuinely interested a moment earlier.

A website's job isn't just to inform. It's to lead someone toward one clear action.

What changed

The result

Nothing about the writing, the photos, or the services changed. The only real change was making the next step impossible to miss. Within a few weeks, inquiries picked up noticeably — not because the business got more interesting, but because visitors finally knew what to do with their interest.
